A Cedar City court for southern sun and real snow
Cedar City is about an hour north of St. George, but its weather is a world apart. At about 5,800 feet it gets snow, hard freezes and freeze-thaw cycles all winter, then strong high-altitude sun all summer. A court here has to handle both.
Winter is about water. Snowmelt that soaks into a crack freezes overnight and pries it wider, so the base is excavated, compacted and graded with enough fall that melt runs off instead of sitting. The post-tension slab, with cables tensioned through the concrete after it cures, keeps the cracks that form tight. Snow on the finished court can be left to melt, or cleared gently with a plastic shovel; the slope carries the melt away.
Summer is about sun. At this elevation the sun is strong, so lighter colors stay cooler underfoot, and a recoat every so often keeps the color bright.
Building happens between the two. Concrete and acrylic need warm, dry weather, so Cedar City courts are built from late spring into fall, after the ground has thawed and before the first hard freeze.
Cedar City is the farthest town our Southern Utah crew covers, about 49 miles up I-15 from Ivins, so we settle the plan, the colors and the extras before the crew arrives.
The court can be whatever you play: pickleball, basketball, tennis or a mix, finished in Sports Master acrylic sand-mix with regulation lines. Add Dominator LED lights for long summer evenings, or ask about a softer CushionX surface; we are certified CushionX installers.
