One Draper, two kinds of weather

Draper stretches over a lot of elevation. A yard near the valley floor and a yard up in SunCrest sit in the same city but get very different winters, and a court should be built for the one it actually has.

Up high, snow comes earlier, stays longer and melts in more cycles. That makes grading and drainage the first priority: the slab needs enough fall to clear meltwater, and the ground around it should carry runoff away. The building season is shorter too, because concrete and acrylic need warm, dry weather to go down right. Snow cleared from the driveway should be piled somewhere other than the court, so its melt doesn't sit on the surface.

Down near the Point, wind is the bigger factor. The same steady air that draws paragliders can push a ball off line and lean on anything tall. Permanent nets on sleeve-set posts, solid fence posts, and windscreens chosen with the wind in mind all help a court play well on a breezy afternoon.

At either end of town, the court itself goes together in the same order: dig and grade, pour the post-tension slab, then roll on Sports Master acrylic sand-mix in your colors and paint the regulation lines. Add Dominator LED lights and the court is usable on long summer evenings at any elevation.

If your family spends weekends on Draper's trails, a court at home gives those same legs something to do on weeknights. A ball rebounder for solo practice, a scoreboard for real games and a bench at the side turn the court into somewhere people want to spend an evening.

Our Northern Utah crew comes from Mapleton and builds across the south end of the valley, including Sandy, Riverton and South Jordan. Estimates are free.

Supreme Custom Courts, and specifically Ola, we're wonderful. I called Supreme with what turned out to be a simple question on how to "fix" something on our Dominator hoop. About 10 minutes later Ola was at our house and two minutes later the problem was "fixed."

Questions

Asked in Draper

We live up in SunCrest. Is a court worth it with the snow?

Yes, if it is built for it. A slab with good fall and grading around it handles meltwater, and the court is ready to play once the snow is gone.

Will wind ruin a pickleball game near the Point?

Wind affects any outdoor game, but fencing, windscreens and a permanent net on sleeve-set posts help. Where the court sits on the lot matters too.

When can a court be built at higher elevation?

Concrete and acrylic surfacing need warm, dry weather, so up high the building season is shorter. We plan the work around it.

Can windscreens show our name or logo?

Yes. Windscreens can carry your logo or family name, and they cut glare as well as wind.
