Planning a pickleball court in West Jordan
Next to tennis, a pickleball court is small. The lines are 20 by 44 feet, and a court with room to move around it fits in a space about 30 by 60 feet, which is why it suits so many West Jordan backyards, and still leaves room for a lawn or a garden.
The biggest decision is the net. A permanent net sits on posts set in sleeves in the slab and stays up all season, ready whenever you walk out. A portable net sets up in minutes and comes down when you want the slab for something else, like basketball or a kids' game.
The kitchen, the non-volley zone beside the net, is where so much of the game happens that its lines need to be sharp and easy to see. We paint regulation lines and can color the kitchen differently from the rest of the court, which helps newer players see where they can and cannot volley.
Pickleball is easy to learn, which makes a home court a good fit for mixed ages. Grandparents, parents and kids can share a game, and the short court means nobody has to chase the ball very far. A courtside bench gives players a place to sit between games.
Below the paint, the yard is excavated and graded to drain, a post-tension slab goes in, and the playing surface is Sports Master acrylic sand-mix. A smooth, even surface matters more in pickleball than people expect, because the ball stays low and every bad spot shows.
