Wind, sun and dust on an Eagle Mountain court
On the open benches west of Utah Lake, a backyard court has nothing between it and the weather. That shapes three choices: how the court handles wind, how it handles sun, and how easy it is to keep clean.
Wind first. A steady breeze pushes pickleballs around, so windscreens on the fence are worth a look, and they cut the glare too. Choose screens with wind vents for the gustiest days, and set nets on permanent posts sleeved into the slab, so nothing needs to be weighed down or chased across the yard.
Sun next. With no shade, the surface gets full afternoon sun, so lighter colors stay cooler underfoot than dark ones, and planning evening play under Dominator LED lights makes a lot of sense. The acrylic will fade slowly in strong sun, and a recoat down the road brings the color back.
Then dust. Open lots and new construction nearby mean wind-blown dirt finds its way onto the court. A quick blow-off and an occasional rinse keep grit from wearing the surface, and landscaping around the court cuts down how much blows in.
New homes are the norm here, and that helps: the court can go in before the landscaping, with power run for lights while the yard is open. The site assessment checks the ground, then the base is excavated, compacted and graded to drain, and a post-tension slab is poured and surfaced with Sports Master acrylic sand-mix.
