Winter sun on a Cedar City court
Cedar City sits high enough to get real snow, but plenty of winter days are clear and bright. Whether a backyard court is playable on those days often comes down to one thing: whether the sun reaches it.
In winter the sun stays low in the southern sky, so the shadow of a house, a wall or a row of evergreens stretches a long way north. A court tucked into that shadow can hold snow and ice for weeks while the rest of the yard is clear. Set where low winter sun can reach it, the same court melts off and dries on its own.
Placement is decided on the site walk, along with grading so meltwater runs off instead of refreezing on the surface. The slab is post-tension concrete: steel cables threaded through it are stretched taut after the concrete cures, which keeps it in compression so freeze-thaw cracks stay closed. Sports Master acrylic sand-mix is applied in the colors you choose.

Where should a court go to stay clear of snow in Cedar City?
Where the low winter sun can reach it, out of the long shadow a house or evergreens throw to the north. Sunlit courts melt off and dry far sooner.
Does meltwater refreeze on the court?
Much less when the pad is graded to carry it off. Water that drains away can't sit on the surface and freeze.
Can we play on winter evenings?
With Dominator LED court lights, yes, on any dry evening. A timer can switch them off at a set hour.
