Can an old Murray slab become a court?
Sometimes it can. If an existing slab is big enough, solid, and sloped so water runs off, we can repair its cracks, resurface it with Sports Master acrylic and paint new lines. That turns a tired slab into a court without pouring new concrete.
Often, though, a patio was never built to be a court. It may be too thin, cracked through, sloped toward the house, or settled in one corner. Acrylic surfacing shows every flaw underneath, so a slab with real problems makes a court that looks good for a season and then shows them again. In that case the honest answer is to remove it and start over.
Starting over means excavating, compacting and grading a base that drains, then pouring a post-tension slab built for play. Steel cables tensioned through the concrete keep it in compression, which is what lets it ride out Salt Lake County winters with its cracks kept tight. The surface goes on last, in your colors, with regulation lines.
If your yard is modest in size, think about what fits. A single pickleball court, a basketball half court, or one slab carrying both covers most families. A ball rebounder at one end makes the most of a smaller space by letting one person practice alone. Lights, a fence or a hoop can be added either way, and placing them is easier while the court is being planned.

Can my old patio become a court?
If it is big enough, solid and drains, it can be repaired and resurfaced. If it is thin, cracked through or settled, a new slab is the better choice.
Why not just paint over a cracked slab?
Acrylic shows whatever is underneath, so cracks and low spots come back through. The slab has to be sound for the surface to last.
