In West Jordan the sun goes down behind the Oquirrh Mountains, and summer games tend to happen right then, after dinner and before dark. Which way the court faces decides whether a shooter spends that hour squinting into the light.
Courts are usually laid out with their length running north and south, so neither end looks straight into a rising or setting sun. On a half court, putting the hoop on the north or south end keeps the backboard out of the glare. When a yard won't allow that, we look at where the sun will sit at game time and plan around what fits.
The build follows the same careful sequence every time. We walk the site, excavate, and grade the pad with enough fall to carry water off. The slab is post-tension concrete, with steel cables pulled tight once it has cured, which keeps small cracks from opening through freeze and thaw. Sports Master acrylic sand-mix goes on top in your colors, and the lines go down last.
If the light is gone before the game is, Dominator LED court lights carry play into the night, on a timer if you like. The hoop goes up last, after the crew has driven the 39 miles from Mapleton a few times; the first trip, for a free estimate, comes before any of it.

Which direction should a backyard basketball court face?
Ideally with its length running north to south, so players at either end aren't looking into a low sun. On a half court that means the hoop on the north or south end.
What if my West Jordan yard only fits the court east to west?
It can still work. Putting the hoop on the east end keeps evening shooters facing away from the sunset, and a windscreen on the west side can cut the glare.
Can we keep playing after dark?
Yes. Dominator LED court lights are installed for even light across the court, and a timer or remote can switch them off at a set hour.
What sits under the colored surface?
A post-tension concrete slab. Steel cables run through it and are tightened after it cures, keeping the concrete squeezed together so small cracks stay closed.
