Room to run past the lines in American Fork

The lines on a basketball court are only part of its size. Players drive past the baseline on a layup, save balls along the sideline and back up beyond the arc to shoot. On a court where the slab ends right at the paint, every one of those steps lands in grass, rock or a flowerbed.

So an American Fork court should carry some extra slab beyond its lines wherever the yard allows, especially behind the hoop and along the sides. We lay the court out with that margin in mind, then fit the lines to the slab. If space is tight, a smaller key-and-arc layout with real room around it plays better than a bigger one with none.

The slab goes in after excavation and grading, so water runs off it. It is post-tension concrete, with steel cables inside tensioned after it cures, which keeps the concrete in compression and cracks closed through the cold months. Sports Master acrylic sand-mix finishes it with grip for quick cuts.

Pole pads protect players coming down near the hoop, and chain-link fencing behind the baseline keeps hard misses in the yard. Our Mapleton base is about 21 miles from American Fork, and the estimate is free.

Supreme Custom Courts, and specifically Ola, we're wonderful. I called Supreme with what turned out to be a simple question on how to "fix" something on our Dominator hoop. About 10 minutes later Ola was at our house and two minutes later the problem was "fixed."

Questions

Asked in American Fork

How much room should a court have past the lines?

As much as the yard allows, especially behind the hoop and along the sides. Even a few feet of slab past the lines keeps feet off the grass.

Is a smaller court with margin better than a bigger one without?

Usually. Players need room to finish layups and chase loose balls, and a slab that ends at the line sends them into the lawn.

What keeps the slab from cracking through an American Fork winter?

Post-tension: steel cables inside are tightened after the concrete cures, holding it together so small cracks stay shut.

Can the court be lit for evening practice?

Yes. Dominator LED court lights light the whole slab evenly, margins included, and can run on a timer.
