A side-yard shooting court in Saratoga Springs
Many Saratoga Springs homes sit on lots where the backyard is short but the side yard runs the length of the house. That long, narrow strip is often written off as dead space. For basketball it can be the right shape.
A shooting court needs width at the hoop end, enough for the key and a little room on each side, but it doesn't need a half court's full width all the way out. Laid along a side yard, a slab can carry a full-size key, a free-throw line at 15 feet and a stretch for shooting from distance, with the hoop at the end nearest the back fence.
Narrow layouts make a few extras more useful. A ball rebounder behind the hoop keeps misses from bouncing over the fence, and chain-link on the open side keeps the ball off the driveway. An in-ground adjustable hoop lets everyone in the family use it.
The construction doesn't shrink with the footprint. The strip is excavated and graded so water drains away from the house, the concrete is post-tensioned, its embedded cables stretched once it has hardened so cracks can't creep open, and Sports Master acrylic sand-mix goes on in your colors. Can a basketball court fit in a side yard?
Often, as a shooting court: a full-size key at one end and a lane for shooting beyond it. We measure the strip and draw what fits.
How wide does a shooting court need to be?
Wide enough at the hoop for the key plus a little room each side. High school and college keys are 12 feet wide.
Will a court beside the house send water toward the foundation?
Not when it is graded right. The fall of the pad is set to carry water away from the house before any concrete is poured.
Can a side-yard court in Saratoga Springs have lights?
