Building a Spanish Fork court in stages

Not every family wants the whole package on day one. In Spanish Fork, at the mouth of Spanish Fork Canyon and next door to our Mapleton base, a court can start simple: a slab, a hoop and good lines, with the extras coming later.

The trick is knowing which decisions can wait. The slab's size and where it sits cannot change once concrete is poured, so settle those first. Lights are worth deciding early too, since their poles and wiring are easiest to plan with the slab. Fencing, windscreens, a ball rebounder, a scoreboard and a courtside bench can all come later, and a logo can be painted when the court is next recoated.

What goes in first is built to carry everything that follows. The ground is dug out and sloped for runoff, and the concrete goes in post-tensioned, with steel cables inside stressed once it has cured, which keeps the concrete in compression and small cracks closed. Sports Master acrylic sand-mix goes on in the colors you pick, with the key and arc painted on.

Canyon wind is part of life at this end of the county, so an in-ground hoop on an anchor is the steady choice from the start. Spanish Fork is about 4 miles from Mapleton, and the estimate is free.

Supreme Custom Courts, and specifically Ola, we're wonderful. I called Supreme with what turned out to be a simple question on how to "fix" something on our Dominator hoop. About 10 minutes later Ola was at our house and two minutes later the problem was "fixed."

Questions

Asked in Spanish Fork

What should be decided before the court is poured?

The slab's size and position, and whether you want lights, since light poles and wiring are easiest to plan with the slab.

What can we add to a Spanish Fork court later?

Fencing, windscreens, a ball rebounder, a scoreboard and timer, and a courtside bench can all be added after the court is built.

Can a logo go on later?

Yes. A logo can be painted into the surface later, often when the court is recoated.

Does the canyon wind affect the hoop?

It can rock a portable hoop. An in-ground hoop held by an anchor kit stays steady when wind comes out of the canyon.
