After a monsoon storm on a Washington court
Most of the year Washington City is dry. Then the summer monsoon arrives, and a single afternoon storm can send water running across yards and streets, carrying red soil and sand with it. A tennis court in its path ends up with a film of red mud, sand in the cracks and stains along the edge where the water ran.
Red soil stains acrylic, especially an older court whose top coat has worn thin. Light stains wash off; set-in ones need new color over them. When we resurface after a stormy season, the court is cleaned hard first, the sand is cleared out of the cracks before they are repaired, and the low places where muddy water pooled are filled. Then the acrylic resurfacer, color coats and regulation lines go on.
Two things help afterward. Keep the ground beside the court lower than the slab, so storm water and the soil it carries stay off. And hose the court off soon after a storm, before the mud dries and bakes on in the sun.
Our Southern Utah crew is based in Ivins, about 10 miles west, and works throughout Washington County. Estimates are free.

Questions
Asked in Washington
Can red mud stains come off our Washington court?
Fresh ones usually rinse off if you get to them before they bake on. Older stains set into worn color, and those disappear under new color coats when the court is resurfaced.
Why is there sand in our cracks after every storm?
Runoff carries sand across the court and it settles into any opening. Sand-filled cracks hold moisture and widen. We clean them out before repairing and sealing them.
How do we keep storm water off the court?
Grade the ground beside the court lower than the slab and give runoff a path around it. If water still crosses the court, we can point out where it comes from.
Which crew comes to Washington City?
Our Southern Utah crew, from its base in Ivins, which also covers St. George and Hurricane.
