A Washington court that keeps the gravel off
Washington City yards are often finished in desert landscaping: rock, gravel, boulders and drip-watered plants instead of lawn. It looks right in Southern Utah and saves water, but a basketball court and a gravel bed make uneasy neighbors.
Two things go wrong. Loose balls bounce into rock and cactus, where they are hard to retrieve and easy to puncture. And gravel kicked or washed onto the court acts like ball bearings under a player's shoes. The fix is in the layout: a margin of slab beyond the lines, chain-link fencing where the court meets rock, and grading that sends storm runoff off the court without dragging gravel across it.
Any drip lines that run where the slab will sit should be moved before excavation, so nothing has to be cut out of a finished court later.
The court itself is post-tensioned concrete, cables inside it stressed once it has hardened so small cracks stay shut, then Sports Master acrylic with sand for footing. A lighter color keeps it cooler in summer and sits well beside desert tones. Our Southern Utah crew is based in Ivins, about 10 miles from Washington, and the estimate is free.

Questions
Asked in Washington
Will gravel from the yard end up on the court?
It can, from feet, wind and storms. A margin of slab past the lines, fencing at the rock edge and the right grading keep most of it off.
Why does gravel on a court matter?
Loose stones roll under shoes like ball bearings and can scratch the surface. A quick sweep before play keeps it safe.
Should drip lines be moved before a Washington court goes in?
Any that run where the slab will sit, yes. They are much easier to move before excavation than after the concrete is poured.
Do balls get punctured in desert landscaping?
Cactus and sharp rock can do it. Fencing where the court meets the landscaping keeps loose balls out of it.
