A St. George hoop that never gets a winter off

In St. George a basketball court doesn't get a winter break. Mild weather means the hoop sees as much use in January as in spring, and with Utah Tech's Trailblazers in town there is no shortage of players. A court that never rests needs equipment chosen for it.

Start with the rim. A breakaway rim flexes under hard dunks and springs back, which keeps the rim and backboard from cracking under constant use. Dominator basketball equipment is built for outdoor conditions, long hot summers included. Pole and backboard pads protect players and take the knocks so the post doesn't.

The surface takes the most wear in the key and under the hoop, where feet land every few seconds of a game. Sports Master acrylic sand-mix gives grip there, and the color you choose matters in the heat: lighter colors stay cooler to stand on in July. When the key eventually wears, the court can be recoated without touching the slab.

Under it all is a pad excavated and graded for the sudden storms, and a post-tension concrete slab whose steel cables are stretched tight after curing. Our Southern Utah crew is based in Ivins, about 8 miles away, and the estimate is free.

Supreme Custom Courts, and specifically Ola, we're wonderful. I called Supreme with what turned out to be a simple question on how to "fix" something on our Dominator hoop. About 10 minutes later Ola was at our house and two minutes later the problem was "fixed."

Questions

Asked in St. George

Does a breakaway rim make sense on a St. George court?

If the court sees hard play all year, yes. It flexes under a dunk and springs back, protecting the rim and the backboard.

Which part of the court wears first?

The key and the area under the hoop, where players plant and land. That part can be recoated when it wears, without replacing the slab.

What color keeps a St. George court cooler?

Lighter colors stay cooler to stand on than dark ones in summer. A mid-tone court with white lines balances heat and contrast.

Is St. George on your crew's regular route?

Very much. Our Southern Utah crew works out of Ivins, roughly 8 miles west, and St. George is one of its home towns.
