Choosing the hoop for a Layton court

Layton is Davis County's largest city and sits right beside Hill Air Force Base, so the households on its streets run from young families to retirees. Who plays decides which hoop goes up, and the hoop shapes how the court gets used.

An in-ground adjustable hoop has a pinlock, so the rim can drop for a child and rise to regulation 10 feet for an adult. It is the one to pick when ages in the house are mixed. A fixed regulation hoop stays at 10 feet and suits players who only ever shoot at game height. A breakaway rim, which flexes when someone dunks, keeps the rim and backboard from cracking.

Then come the details that make a hoop safe and lasting. Pole and backboard pads cover the spots players crash into, and a hoop anchor kit secures the pole at its base. Dominator basketball equipment is made for outdoor weather, so the backboard isn't a seasonal thing.

The hoop stands at the end of a court built properly from the dirt up: excavated, graded for runoff, then a slab of post-tension concrete with tensioned steel cables, finished in Sports Master acrylic sand-mix. Layton is a 68-mile drive from our Mapleton base, and a free estimate is usually where the hoop choice gets made.

Supreme Custom Courts, and specifically Ola, we're wonderful. I called Supreme with what turned out to be a simple question on how to "fix" something on our Dominator hoop. About 10 minutes later Ola was at our house and two minutes later the problem was "fixed."

Questions

Asked in Layton

Adjustable or fixed: which hoop should a Layton family pick?

Adjustable if kids and adults will share it, since the pinlock moves the rim up and down. Fixed if everyone shoots at regulation height.

What is a breakaway rim?

A rim that gives under a hard dunk and springs back, so the force doesn't crack the rim or the backboard.

Are pole pads necessary?

They are worth it for anyone who drives to the basket. Pole and backboard pads soften the post and the bottom edge of the board, where collisions happen.

Does the hoop need an anchor?

An in-ground hoop is held at its base by an anchor kit, which keeps the pole steady through hard play and windy days.
