Which arc to paint on a Salt Lake City court

Salt Lake City is a basketball town. The Jazz play downtown, and plenty of kids here learn the game on a driveway long before they see the inside of a gym. A court of your own gives them real lines to learn on.

One of the first choices is which three-point arc to paint. The NBA arc is 23 feet 9 inches at the top. The college arc is 22 feet 1¾ inches, and the high school arc is 19 feet 9 inches. On a tight city lot the high school arc often fits where the longer one won't, and it matches what most young players shoot in their games.

The court underneath starts with a site walk. We excavate, grade the pad so water runs off it, and pour a post-tension concrete slab: steel cables inside are pulled tight after it cures, which keeps small cracks closed through Salt Lake winters. Then comes Sports Master acrylic sand-mix in your colors, with the lines painted last.

For the hoop, most households weigh an in-ground adjustable hoop, whose pinlock lets a nine-year-old and a parent share one rim, against a fixed regulation hoop for older players. A breakaway rim is worth adding once anyone in the house can dunk. Our Northern Utah crew, based in Mapleton about 47 miles south, builds across the Salt Lake Valley, and estimates are free.

Supreme Custom Courts, and specifically Ola, we're wonderful. I called Supreme with what turned out to be a simple question on how to "fix" something on our Dominator hoop. About 10 minutes later Ola was at our house and two minutes later the problem was "fixed."

Questions

Asked in Salt Lake City

Will a half court fit on a Salt Lake City lot?

Often, yes. A half court is the key, the arc and the hoop on a compact slab, and it can be shaped to the room you have. We measure the yard at the free estimate and show you what fits.

Which three-point line should we paint?

The one your players shoot in games. For families with kids in school that is usually the high school arc at 19 feet 9 inches, which also takes the least room.

Can pickleball lines go on the basketball court too?

Yes. Pickleball lines can share the slab, painted in a different color so both games stay clear, with a permanent net on sleeve-set posts or a portable one.

Can the court carry our team colors or a logo?

Yes. Jazz purple, school red or something of your own: the court, the lane and the border take separate colors, and a family name or logo can be painted in.
