Evenings in Provo end with the sun dropping toward Utah Lake, and that low western light is beautiful until you have to return a lob into it. On a pickleball court that runs east to west, one side spends every summer evening squinting. Turning the court north to south puts the sun off to the side for both players, which is why many courts are laid out that way.
Not every yard allows the ideal, so orientation is one of the things we look at on the site walk, along with access, grade and where water will go. Then we excavate and shape a pad with a gentle fall so the court drains, and pour a post-tension slab; once it cures, the cables inside are stressed so ordinary hairline cracks stay tight.
Color comes last: Sports Master acrylic sand-mix in shades you pick, then regulation lines on a 20-by-44 court. A contrasting kitchen helps in evening light, and a permanent net on sleeve-set posts is always ready.
Add fencing, windscreens and Dominator LED lights for after the sunset. Our Northern Utah crew is only 9 miles off in Mapleton, so a Provo site walk is easy to set up, and free.

Which way should a pickleball court face?
North to south where the yard allows. That keeps the rising and setting sun off to the side instead of in one player's eyes.
What if our yard only fits an east-west court?
It still works. A contrasting kitchen color and Dominator LED lights for after sundown make the evening glare easier to live with.
