A St. George resurface, timed around the heat

A St. George court never really gets an off-season. That is the appeal, and it is also why surfaces here wear the way they do: constant play polishes the texture, and strong desert sun bleaches the color and dries out the top coats faster than up north.

When it is time to resurface, timing matters as much as technique. Acrylic coatings need moderate temperatures to cure properly. Spread on a court that is baking in a July afternoon, they can dry too fast. So in St. George we plan resurfacing for spring and fall, when mild days and cool nights give each coat the time it needs to cure.

The job itself is a careful clean, crack repair and leveling of any low spots, then new Sports Master acrylic built up in coats with sand for traction, and fresh regulation lines. If the old color ran hot underfoot, this is the moment to go lighter. Dominator LED lights, if the court doesn't have them yet, make evening play the norm in summer.

St. George work goes to our Southern Utah crew from Ivins, roughly 8 miles away, which also recoats courts in Washington, Santa Clara and Hurricane. Estimates are free.

Supreme Custom Courts, and specifically Ola, we're wonderful. I called Supreme with what turned out to be a simple question on how to "fix" something on our Dominator hoop. About 10 minutes later Ola was at our house and two minutes later the problem was "fixed."

Questions

Asked in St. George

When is the right time to resurface a St. George court?

Spring and fall, when temperatures are moderate and the coatings can cure properly. Summer heat makes acrylic dry too fast.

Our court is too hot to stand on in summer. Can resurfacing help?

A lighter color absorbs less sun and stays cooler than a dark one, so a resurface is a good time to change. Evening play under lights helps too.

What wears out a St. George court first?

Usually the color and the texture. Strong sun bleaches the top coats and year-round play polishes the sand smooth, often before any cracks appear.

Which crew covers St. George?

Our Southern Utah crew, which drives in from Ivins, roughly 8 miles, for St. George resurfacing.
