Getting the sand out of a Hurricane court
Hurricane's ground is sandy, and the wind that gave the town its name still moves that sand around. It drifts onto courts in thin layers and collects along fences and in corners. On its own, sand does little. Under shoes it becomes an abrasive, scuffing the color and sanding the texture down until the court is smooth and the lines look worn at the edges.
Sand also finds its way into cracks, where it keeps them from closing and holds moisture against the concrete. Before a resurface, cracks are cleaned out completely, not just swept, so the repair material grips solid concrete. The whole court is washed, low spots are leveled, and only then do the new coats go on.
Fresh Sports Master acrylic restores the texture with sand of its own, the right kind, held in the coating, and the lines are repainted. Chain-link fencing with windscreens along the windward side helps keep drifting sand off, and a leaf blower makes quick work of what gets through.

Questions
Asked in Hurricane
Does blowing sand wear out a Hurricane court?
Yes, through play. Sand on the surface acts like sandpaper under shoes, scuffing the color and wearing the texture smooth. Clearing it before games slows the wear.
Why do you clean sand out of the cracks?
Repair material has to grip clean, solid concrete. Sand left in a crack weakens the repair and holds moisture, so cracks are cleaned out completely first.
Can windscreens keep sand off?
They help. Windscreens on the fence along the side the wind usually comes from block some of the drifting sand, and they cut glare too.

Our Southern Utah crew from Ivins, roughly 22 miles away, which also resurfaces courts in Washington and St. George.
