A Cottonwood Heights court for the off-season

When Big and Little Cottonwood are open, a backyard court is mostly a place where snow lands. Once the resorts close, the same slab becomes the busiest spot on the property. Building in Cottonwood Heights means planning for both halves of the year.

For winter, the slab has to shrug off freeze and thaw. Ours is post-tension concrete, with cables inside drawn tight once it cures so small cracks don't open, poured on ground that has been dug out and graded to shed meltwater. A wide gate in the court fencing makes it easy to get a snowblower in, and a portable pickleball net can come inside for the season.

For summer, the court should hold whatever the family plays. Basketball, pickleball, tennis and volleyball lines can share one Sports Master acrylic surface, each in its own color, and a fixed regulation hoop stands up to a lot of shooting. Evenings here can turn cool and breezy off the canyons, so windscreens on the fence and Dominator LED lights help stretch them.

We're certified installers of AT Sports CushionX if you want a softer surface. Cottonwood Heights is about 37 miles from Mapleton, our Northern Utah crew's base, and estimates are free.

Supreme Custom Courts, and specifically Ola, we're wonderful. I called Supreme with what turned out to be a simple question on how to "fix" something on our Dominator hoop. About 10 minutes later Ola was at our house and two minutes later the problem was "fixed."

Questions

Asked in Cottonwood Heights

Can a sport court be cleared of snow?

Yes. Clear it the way you would a patio, avoiding sharp metal edges that can scratch the acrylic. A wide gate in the court fence makes it easier to get in with a snowblower.

What should come down for winter?

A portable pickleball net stores in the garage. Permanent posts stay in their sleeves, and windscreens can be taken off the fence if you'd rather not leave them to the wind and snow.

Which sports make sense for a Cottonwood Heights family court?

Whatever your family plays in the warm months. Basketball and pickleball pair well on one slab; tennis and volleyball need more room. Each sport's lines go down in their own color.

Is the crew far from Cottonwood Heights?

About 37 miles. Our Northern Utah crew is based in Mapleton and also builds in Sandy, Holladay and Murray.
