Pickleball Court Installation in Cottonwood Heights, UT

In Cottonwood Heights the snow piles up all winter, and much of it ends up on whatever open, flat ground is near the driveway. If that ground is your pickleball court, plan for it.

A Cottonwood Heights court that sheds the snowpack

Cottonwood Heights gets canyon-sized winters, and every shovelful from the driveway has to land somewhere. A flat, open pickleball court is tempting, and that is worth thinking about before the court is built, because a deep pile melting slowly in spring sends a lot of water across one spot.

So we plan the court with the snow in mind. At the site walk we look at where snow usually gets pushed, then grade the base so meltwater runs off and away instead of sitting under the pile. Where the slope above the yard feeds water toward the court, subsurface drainage can carry it around.

The slab is post-tension concrete, which matters in a place with this many freeze-and-thaw days: the cables inside are pulled tight once it cures and keep small cracks from widening. The acrylic on top is Sports Master sand-mix, the court and kitchen in colors you pick and the lines painted to regulation.

When the snow is gone, the net posts are already in the slab, and Dominator LED lights stretch the cool canyon evenings. The drive up from Mapleton is about 37 miles for our Northern Utah crew, and estimates are free.

Supreme Custom Courts, and specifically Ola, we're wonderful. I called Supreme with what turned out to be a simple question on how to "fix" something on our Dominator hoop. About 10 minutes later Ola was at our house and two minutes later the problem was "fixed."

Questions

Asked in Cottonwood Heights

Can we pile snow on the court in winter?

A deep pile is not ideal. We plan the court and grading around where your snow usually goes, so meltwater drains away instead of sitting on the surface.

Does a canyon winter crack a court?

Freeze and thaw is hard on concrete. A post-tension slab keeps the small cracks every slab gets from opening up, and good grading keeps water from sitting on the surface.

How quickly can we play once spring arrives?

As soon as the court is dry. The net posts are already set in sleeves in the slab, so the first game is a matter of sweeping off and hanging the net.

How far is your crew from Cottonwood Heights?

About 37 miles. The Northern Utah crew is based in Mapleton and works on the east side of the valley, including Holladay and Sandy.
