Leaves, roots and a Holladay tennis court

In Holladay the trees came first, and many tennis courts were fitted in among them. That gives a court shade on summer afternoons. It also means leaves sit on the surface through the fall, sap and seeds land on it in spring, and roots go looking for water under the edges.

Each of those leaves a mark. Wet leaves left in place stain acrylic with brown shadows. Roots can lift a ridge along the edge of the court or open a crack that runs inward. When we resurface, we clean off the stains, repair the cracks, and repair a raised edge where it can be brought level, so the ball bounces true. Then we lay down acrylic resurfacer, color coats and new lines.

If a root has heaved part of the base badly, we will tell you, since no coating can flatten what is pushing up from below. Sometimes the answer is a word with an arborist about the tree before the court is finished.

Keeping leaves blown off in the fall does more for new color than anything else. Our Northern Utah crew is based in Mapleton, about 40 miles away, and works in Holladay, Murray and Cottonwood Heights. Estimates are free.

Supreme Custom Courts, and specifically Ola, we're wonderful. I called Supreme with what turned out to be a simple question on how to "fix" something on our Dominator hoop. About 10 minutes later Ola was at our house and two minutes later the problem was "fixed."

Questions

Asked in Holladay

Can leaf stains be cleaned off our Holladay court?

Light ones often clean up. Deep tannin stains that have set into old color usually disappear only under new coats, which is one reason a resurfacing makes an old court look so different.

A tree root has raised the edge of the court. What can be done?

If the ridge is small, it can often be leveled and patched before the new surface goes on. If the root is still pushing the base up, the tree and the court need a plan together, and we will say so.

How do we keep the new color looking good under trees?

Blow or sweep off leaves and seeds before they sit wet for long. Shade itself is fine; what stains is debris left lying on the surface.

Can you work around our landscaping?

Yes. We plan access with you before we start, so the crew and materials reach the court without disturbing beds or lawn more than they have to.
