Pickleball Court Installation in Sandy, UT

On a sloping Sandy yard, a pickleball court is easier to fit than most people expect: it needs far less flat ground than tennis, and we build the level pad it sits on.

A Sandy pickleball court on the hillside

East of State Street, Sandy climbs toward the Wasatch, and many backyards tilt toward the valley. A tennis court on that kind of lot means moving a lot of earth. A pickleball court is a much smaller target: the lines cover 20 by 44 feet, and the full playing area is around 30 by 60, so the level pad it needs is far easier to carve out.

We start by walking the yard and reading the grade. Then we excavate, cut into the high side and build up the low side as needed, and finish the base with a gentle slope so water runs off instead of across the court. On some hillside lots, subsurface drainage helps carry runoff from the slope above around the slab.

The slab is post-tension concrete; the cables in it are pulled tight after it cures, so small cracks stay closed through Sandy's freezes and thaws. The surface is Sports Master acrylic sand-mix with regulation lines. Pick the colors for the court, the kitchen and the border.

One thing slopes teach quickly: a ball that leaves the court keeps rolling. Chain-link fencing on the downhill side, or all the way around, saves a lot of chasing, and windscreens can go on it. Sandy is about 34 miles north of our Northern Utah crew’s base in Mapleton, and estimates are free.

Supreme Custom Courts, and specifically Ola, we're wonderful. I called Supreme with what turned out to be a simple question on how to "fix" something on our Dominator hoop. About 10 minutes later Ola was at our house and two minutes later the problem was "fixed."

Questions

Asked in Sandy

Can you build a pickleball court on a sloped Sandy yard?

Yes. We excavate and grade a level pad, cutting into the high side and building up the low side, and leave a gentle slope on the finished slab so water drains off.

Does a slope change the drainage plan?

Often. Water from the hillside above has to go around the court, not across it, so some lots need subsurface drainage as well as grading.

Why fence a pickleball court on a hill?

On a slope, a ball that leaves the court can roll a long way. Chain-link court fencing keeps play on the court, and windscreens can be added to cut wind and glare.

How much smaller is pickleball than tennis?

Much smaller. A pickleball court's lines are 20 by 44 feet, while a tennis doubles court is 78 by 36. That makes the level ground a pickleball court needs far easier to find on a hillside.
